Chelsea have added another exciting youngster to their development ranks beating their European rivals to the 18-year-old’s signature when his contract expires
Chelsea have completed the signing of Benfica winger Diego Moreira with an ‘announcement coming soon’ per reports. The talented 18-year-old will see his contract end with the Portuguese side this summer and sign for Chelsea, much to the frustration of their European rivals including PSG.
Portuguese news outlet Record report that Moreira has already agreed a move to Chelsea this season despite interest from PSG and AC Milan. The left-footed winger can play on either flank and has dual nationality with Belgium and Portugal.
Moreira caught the attention of scouts after helping Benfica win last season’s UEFA Youth League and made his Benfica senior debut against Pacos de Ferreira last year, but has not featured this season. The fast and technically gifted teenager, who played for Portugal under-19s, has been likened to former Manchester United star Nani.
Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly is expect to continue his mass overhaul at Stamford Bridge this summer as he continues to build for the future. Picking up Moreira at the end of his contract will add to their numbers as the Chelsea co-owner looks to recoup approximately £200million in sales this summer.
The London Evening Standard claim that Chelsea are planning for a clear-out of their squad this summer in order to trim the wage bill and ensure that their next boss has a smaller pool of players to choose from. Since taking over Boehly has had a huge £600m-plus outlay in the previous two transfer windows signing the likes of Cesare Casadei, Carney Chukwuemeka and Andrey Santos.
Senior players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Romelu Lukaku and Cesar Azpilicueta are expected to be amongst those axed this summer as Boehly looks to reduce the wage budget at Stamford Bridge. Lukaku was the first casualty of the clear out after being loaned back to Inter Milan on a season-long deal.
However, there are fears that Chelsea might struggle to find teams willing to pay the asking price for their senior stars. High wage demands could force Boehly to drop his transfer valuations and even consider paying some players off for the remainder of their contracts.
The incoming boss at Chelsea could also have their own transfer demands with the co-owner increasingly struck’ by Mauricio Pochettino after further talks with the former Tottenham head coach. Former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann is another target after the 35-year-old ‘changed his mind’ about a return to management.
