Why Enzo Maresca remove 5 key players in Chelsea's conference league squad

According to a latest report by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has omitted five (5) first-team players for Chelsea's Conference League clash against Panathinaikos.

The Blues are set to face the Greek side on Thursday, October 24 in Athens, Greece.

As per the report, Maresca has opted to leave behind Levi Colwill, Reece James, Malo Gusto, Moises Caicedo, and Nicolas Jackson.

The Italian manager has resolved to use the Conference League to give fringe and squad players game time.

Now, with the aforementioned stars absent, players like Renato Veiga, Marc Guiu, Kieran Dewsbury Hall, and Cesare Casadei can be assured of playing.

Resting players is also paramount as the Blues have a tough clash with Newcastle United over the weekend.

The Blues will look to make it two wins out of two games in the third-tier European club competitions. They defeated Belgian side Gent 4-2 in their last outing.
