What ESPN pundit said about Enzo Maresca statement on Chelsea players

According to report from Chelsea Chronicle, Former Liverpool star Steve Nicol has voiced his discontent with Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca's recent remarks following the Blues' 4-2 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion.

While Chelsea showcased impressive attacking prowess, highlighted by Cole Palmer's four goals, Nicol feels the defensive frailties—particularly from goalkeeper Robert Sanchez—were dangerously overlooked.

Sanchez's performance included two major blunders that contributed to Brighton's goals, yet Maresca chose not to hold him accountable for these errors.

Instead, he opted to encourage the goalkeeper and informed fans to brace themselves for similar defensive lapses, attributing them to Chelsea's tactical approach.

Nicol's Reaction to Maresca's Statements

After the match, Maresca was quoted saying, “I told Robert and the players, ‘From now on, we are going to concede 10 more goals like the way we conceded the second goal.’ It’s the way we want to play.” Nicol, reacting to this on ESPN, was incredulous.

“That’s garbage. Seriously? I’ve never come across comments like Maresca’s before. It’s absolute nonsense,” he stated emphatically.

He elaborated, “It’s one thing for a player to make an occasional error when trying to play the ball out from the back, but to openly admit that you expect more mistakes and dismiss them as part of your philosophy is just wrong.”
