Chelsea’s head coach, Enzo Maresca, has revealed that Wesley Fofana will endure lasting pain from his recent knee injury
This somber insight came after Fofana displayed signs of discomfort in Chelsea’s recent 2-1 victory over Newcastle.
The Blues are set to face Newcastle again in the Carabao Cup at St. James' Park, adding weight to Fofana’s resilience as he battles through the lingering effects of a severe injury that sidelined him for almost all of last season.
Despite the persistent pain, Fofana’s return has been marked by his tenacity and dedication, according to Maresca.
“He had a bad movement in the first half, very bad", He Stated.
“But he’s a fighter. He was there, probably with pain, playing with the pain.”
Maresca expressed deep admiration for Fofana's commitment, acknowledging the difficulty of bouncing back after such a lengthy absence.
“I said in one of my last press conferences that I really love Wes because it’s not easy after more than one year out to come back and be a fighter in the way he is,” Maresca added.
He explained that with injuries of this nature, residual pain is often inevitable. “When you have that kind of injury, you’re going to feel pain for the rest of your career. Unfortunately, it’s like this.”
Maresca also provided an update on Reece James, who, after an extended period on the sidelines, recently returned to play in Chelsea’s last two Premier League matches.
“He played two Premier League games in a row with us, Liverpool and Newcastle, in both games he was very good,” Maresca said.
