What Marc Cucurella said about Erling Haaland

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has questioned why Manchester City striker Erling Haaland took offence at his song lyric that mentioned the Norwegian’s name.

In celebrating Spain winning Euro 2024, Cucurella was seen singing a song which was dedicated to him but it also used the phrase “Haaland better tremble because Cucurella is coming”.

Speaking about the controversy, Cucurella said that Haaland had simply misinterpreted the meaning, claiming it was meant as a compliment rather than as a form of mockery:

“There was a lot of talk about that in England too and these are things that happen I am very happy and I think that if someone sings a song with his name it is because he is a top player or a world star, you would not use the name of a player who was not known. Everyone is happy because he scored, and I am still just as happy for winning the Euros.”

Cucurella insists he would have no qualms repeating the lyric in the future:

“I would do it again, they are things that happen and stay there. In the end in England, they took it out of context a bit and I don’t think he knew it either. He read what they said and took it a little personally.”

Haaland got the last laugh

No matter the intention behind the song, it certainly fired up the Norwegian international when his team faced Chelsea on the opening day.

Haaland outmuscled Cucurella before scoring the first goal during the 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge last month.

The striker is one of four City nominees for the Ballon d’Or

It was announced earlier this week that Haaland is on the 30-man shortlist for this year’s European Footballer of the Year award.

Ruben Dias, Phil Foden and Rodri are also among the nominees with Pep Guardiola up for the Men’s Coach of the Year
