Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has revealed that defenders Reece James and Malo Gusto will miss the upcoming match against West Ham due to ongoing fitness issues as reported by London World.
While James continues to recover from a recurring hamstring problem, Gusto has also faced injury setbacks. On a positive note, Maresca confirmed that Romeo Lavia, sidelined for the last three matches with a muscle injury, will return to the squad.
Reece James, who underwent surgery last season for his hamstring, is yet to fully recover after suffering a relapse in pre-season.
Speaking about his captain's condition, Maresca admitted that it’s difficult to predict when James will be back on the field. He said, “Reece still needs more time. We don’t have an idea when James will be but that is quite unfortunate, but we hope to have him as soon as possible.”
Despite James’ absence, Malo Gusto has impressed in his place, offering stability at the back for Chelsea.
However, Gusto’s own injury concerns will keep him out of the West Ham game. Maresca emphasized that both players are still working on their recovery.
Adding to Chelsea's good news, Enzo Fernandez, who missed the previous match against Bournemouth, and Dewsbury Hall will also make their return to the lineup.
The Blues, who lost to West Ham at the London Stadium last season, are now eyeing their first three away wins in a Premier League season since the 2017-18 campaign under Antonio Conte.
