Enzo Maresca speaks on why Cole Palmer has to fight for his place in the starting XI

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has spoken to the media in his latest interview on why Cole Palmer needs to fight for his place in the starting XI.

Maresca took charge officially at the beginning of last month, drilled the players for two weeks and led them to the United States for preseason. Chelsea drew their first friendly against Wrexham by 2-2. They lost 4-1 to Celtic and claimed a 3-0 win over Club America last night which was their first win under Maresca. Chelsea will play a couple of tough games next against Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan. Meanwhile. Cole Palmer has been away on holiday due to his involvement at the Euros.

However, as gathered from Vince™ on X, Enzo Maresca talked about why Cole Palmer has to fight for his place in the Chelsea starting lineup when he said:

"I’ve spoken with him (Palmer) many times. He is not going to play if he does not work. I had Cole one year so I know him. I know he likes a little bit of freedom. But if Cole is what he is now, it’s because he learned for 10 to 15 years the way he learned at Manchester City.

On and off the ball, for sure he is a fantastic player. He scored (over) 20 goals last season. Hopefully, he can score the same but it is not easy for any player to score (over) 20 one year and do the same the next. What we want from Cole is to try and be himself.”
