Chelsea player set to name vice-captain ahead of Man City EPL game

Chelsea have the task of replacing one of their leaders ahead of the new Premier League season.

Conor Gallagher’s move to Atletico Madrid is close to being confirmed, with the midfielder featuring as captain for large portions of last season.

This came off the back of injury woes to both Reece James and Ben Chilwell throughout the previous campaign.

With their fitness certainly not something anyone at the club can really bank on at the moment, it looks as if they will need to look inside their own camp to find a new leader.

It looks as if Enzo Maresca has seen what he needs for this role from Enzo Fernandez, who joined up with the pre-season tour of the United States due to his involvement in the Copa America.

Enzo Fernandez to be appointed a Chelsea vice-captain

According to The Telegraph, Chelsea are set to appoint the World Cup winner as one of their vice-captains for the upcoming campaign.

Despite it not always being on show since his move to Stamford Bridge, there is no doubting the supreme talent Fernandez has. He has previously been described as ‘gifted’ by Andy Townsend.

It looks as if Enzo Maresca has a plan in place to get the best out of Fernandez though, with many believing the positions he picked up last season under Mauricio Pochettino were not designed to get the best out of him.

Competition for minutes in midfield at Chelsea

There will be plenty of competition for minutes in the middle of the park this season for Chelsea, with them currently having a clean bill of health when it comes to that position.

This means Romeo Lavia, who has impressed greatly during pre-season, will have an opportunity to finally make his mark on his new club after his woeful luck last season.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall will also be pushing for minutes, after being a key player for Maresca at Leicester City last season.
