Barcelona make move for Chelsea star, Chukwuemeka

Carney Chukwuemeka in action for Chelsea.

Carney Chukwuemeka has emerged as a target for Barcelona should they decided to sign a midfielder in the final weeks of the window according to reports in Spain.

Chukwuemeka arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2022 from Aston Villa in a deal worth around £20m, but his time at Stamford Bridge has been plagued by injuries.

The 20-year-old missed a large part of last season with a knee injury and he’s made just 27 appearances for the Blues across two seasons.

Barcelona interested in Chukwuemeka

Chukwuemeka was part of Chelsea’s squad for their pre-season tour of America, but after starting the opening two games against Wrexham and Celtic he didn’t feature in any of the final three games.

The midfielder reportedly attracted interest from AC Milan earlier in the summer and his contract is believed to contain a £40m release clause.

Chukwuemeka has emerged as a possible target for Barcelona.

Despite his obvious talent it’s unclear where Chukwuemeka fits in under Enzo Maresca given the competition for places in the middle of the park, coupled with the fact Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku could be deployed in a deeper number eight role this season.

However, Spanish outlet Sport have reported that Chukwuemeka is of interest to Barcelona should they decide to enter the market for a midfielder and are fans of his “dynamic” and “versatile” profile.

The report adds that conversations have taken place between the clubs and agents to explore the possibility of a deal, but Barcelona will only push ahead if Hansi Flick request a new midfielder.

Whilst Chelsea have made their stance clear on wanting to keep Chukwuemeka that could potentially change towards the end of the window if an offer were to come in, but it’s possible the player may seek a move away if he feels he’s not going to get the minutes he needs this season in order to continue his development.
