Chelsea enter race to sign world-class centre-back

Chelsea have entered the race to sign a ‘world class’ centre-back who Vinicius Jr says is really ‘strong’, according to a recent report.

The West Londoners have parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino which came as a real shock to many across the footballing world.

Now, Todd Boehly is in the process of finding his successor, with a multitude of managers linked with the vacancy.

Though, whilst that process unfolds, club chiefs remain hard at work behind the scenes looking for transfer targets.

That said, it’s just come to light that they’re in for a ‘world class’ centre-back.

Chelsea want to sign Ronald Araujo

According to Mundo Deportivo, Chelsea have submitted an offer to sign Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo, who Vinicius Jr has described as really ‘strong’.

The report further notes that Bayern Munich are eager to land his signature and former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel held a discussion with him just before Christmas.

Competition is expected to be rife for his signature this summer and any forthcoming suitor will have to outlay £85.2m.

So, it would appear that if he is to make the switch to West London, Boehly and his chiefs would have to move on players to stay in line with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Ronald Araujo statistics

As per FBref data, Araujo is of a similar profile to Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, as he’s very assured in possession.

The 25-year-old, who can operate as a right-back, sits in the top 12 per cent for assists per 90 compared to his positional peers across the big five leagues.

He also ranks in the top 17 per cent for passes attempted, evincing his desire to get on the ball and create from deep.

Araujo would be a phenomenal signing for Chelsea.
