Chelsea fans with similar heartbreak after Blues lost to Liverpool in Carabao cup final

Virgil van Dijk scored a late goal for Liverpool on Sunday evening, to win the Merseyside club their 10th League Cup trophy.

Chelsea travelled to Wembley with the hope of winning their first domestic cup in six years, and did come close to getting a hand on the trophy in the first half, when Raheem Sterling converted a low cross from Nicolas Jackson to put the Blues ahead, but after a VAR check, the goal was ruled off for an offside.

Chelsea had a few more opportunities in the first period, however, they couldn’t really make any of them count, and the two sides had to go in level at the break.

The second half saw both Liverpool and Chelsea struggle to really create anything until the 62nd minute when the Reds were awarded a free-kick just outside the Chelsea area.

Van Dijk found the net for Liverpool, but their celebration was cut short by VAR, who called centre referee, Chris Kavanagh to carry out an off-field review of the goal after spotting an infringement from Endo Wataru in the build-up.

Kavanagh ruled out Van Dijk’s effort, and the game went on to drag into extra time, but the Dutchman was not to be denied, as he again, got on the end of a Kostas Tsimikas corner, to win the tie for Liverpool with just two minutes remaining on the clock.

It was a good performance from Mauricio Pochettino’s men, to be fair, but they dropped their guards when it mattered the most, and will now hope to learn from it, as they continue to fight for a strong finish this season.
