Journalist Matt Law believes that Chelsea manager Frank Lampard considers a new left-back as the next priority after Bayer Leverkusen ace Kai Havertz.
It has been widely reported that Chelsea are currently in talks with the Bundesliga side over potential transfer fee for the 21-year-old (ESPN).
A negotiation for a transfer of such scale would understandably take some time, but a few Chelsea fans have also been restless about potential defensive recruits.
Havertz’s arrival, following Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, would not help Chelsea solve arguably their biggest problem this season after conceding 79 goals from 59 games in all competitions this season.
The Telegraph journalist Law helps explain why Chelsea are currently focusing on Havertz and what is potentially next in line.
He told London is Blue Podcast: “Havertz, at the moment, is their number one [priority] because they have been so far down the line with him.
“I think they [Chelsea] view this opportunity [to bring in] a player of his talent really doesn’t come around very often.
“So he’s the number one priority, and then I think a left-back, after that, is more of a priority than a centre-back.
“Lampard identified pretty early that he needed a new left-back, I think he thinks that he’s got two wingbacks at the moment rather than two left-backs.”
Law also emphasised that Chelsea would have to offload either Emerson Palmieri or Marcos Alonso before signing a new left-back.
“And I think goalkeeper after that, the last month showed there is a problem there [goalkeeper options],” he added.
He added that Lampard has clearly “lost interest” in Kepa Arrizabalaga, while Willy Caballero will turn 39 soon.
For the central defence, however, Law added that Lampard still believes his centre-backs are “coachable” and can be improved whether by changing the team setup or individual coaching.
